How to associate certain file type (video, audio, etc ...) with an application ?

Just follow the following tutorial, here is associated with all video formats MPlayer:
- Go to the menu: Ambient Preferences -> MIME types
- Double click on the node "video" (directly edit the family avoids editing each leaf of the tree through the concept of inheritance)
- Click Add (to add an action)
- Fill the "Name" field with "Play with MPlayer" eg
- Click Add (to add a command)
- Select the mode Workbench for the type of control
- Fill in the text field next to it with something like:
"Work: MPlayer / gmplayer% sp" (% sp is the path of the selected file is described in the tooltip)
- If you want your action triggers a DoubleClick choose "DoubleClick" for the type of event (the other choice is to let the action from the context menu, useful if you want to have several choices of actions one given mimetype)
- Check the first checkmark "change the current directory to the source." Optional, but like that MPlayer will open the directory in question if you open a new file from MPlayer
- Check the last checkmark "Merge Selected". This is also optional, but useful for multisélections to add to the playlist instead of Mplayer to launch a selected file by mplayer.
Voili here. Entire family of video / trick will open with mplayer this way. (for Fab)

How to define the preferences of a volume lister ?

"Just an extra-note that could interest some users: there's more to know regarding deficons for volumes that don't have their own disk.info.

If a volume (let's say hd1) doesn't have its own disk.info file, Ambient will attempt to load from deficons path def_hd1disk.info, then def_hdxdisk.info (pattern matching any hd0 to hd9 device) and finally def_disk.info.

To be noted that if the deficon for the device exists (def_hd1disk.info in this case), the volume can actually be snapshot, and the position/dimensions/mode information will be stored in that icon.

This can be handy in particular for removable drives coming from other OSes (usb, firewire hard disks, smb shares, whatever)."
